Oak wilt is the single most destructive tree disease in Central Texas. It kills live oaks and red oaks — often the most valuable, oldest trees on a property — and it spreads underground through root grafts and above ground through sap-feeding beetles. Early diagnosis and correct treatment dramatically improve survival. Late diagnosis is often fatal to the tree.
Confirm oak wilt through leaf symptoms (veinal necrosis on live oaks, sudden crown decline on red oaks), pattern of spread, and if needed, lab confirmation.
For oak wilt centers, install trenches 4 feet deep and 100 feet beyond infected trees to break underground root connections and prevent spread to neighboring oaks.
Preventative fungicide injections applied to high-value uninfected oaks near known oak wilt centers. Effective for 2-3 years per treatment.
Any oak pruning is done in dormant season (July-January) only, with wound paint applied immediately to every cut.
Ongoing evaluation of treated trees and surrounding canopy for early signs of spread.
Propiconazole injections typically run $150-500 per tree depending on trunk diameter. Trenching is priced by linear foot and equipment access requirements. Diagnostic assessments are included with any treatment work.
